While most visitors spend their Galapagos time aboard cruise vessels, pre-cruise and post-cruise accommodation on the inhabited islands offers its own distinct experience. The two main tourist hubs—Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal—provide a range of lodging options to suit various budgets and preferences.
We recommend spending at least one night before your cruise departure on Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal. This provides a buffer against flight delays and allows you to explore the island's terrestrial attractions, from tortoise reserves to lava tunnels.
The main inhabited islands and their characteristics
The most developed tourist infrastructure in the Galapagos. Puerto Ayora offers the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and shops. The Charles Darwin Research Station and giant tortoise reserve are easily accessible. Most cruises depart from nearby Baltra Island airport.
The capital of the Galapagos Province and the first island many visitors encounter. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno offers a more laid-back atmosphere than Santa Cruz, with direct flights and access to the Interpretation Center and Tijeretas wildlife viewpoint.
The largest island remains the least developed for tourism. Puerto Villamil provides basic hotels and access to Sierra Negra volcano, flamingo lagoons, and the Wall of Tears. Some visitors extend their stay here before or after cruises.
Mid-Range Hotels: Family-owned establishments offering clean, air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms. Many include breakfast and airport transfer services. Properties like Hotel Fiesta and Ikapa Royal provide comfortable base camps for pre/post cruise stays.
Budget Guesthouse: Simple but adequate rooms with shared bathrooms are available in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo. These suit budget travelers who plan to spend minimal time indoors. Prices can be negotiated during low season.
Eco-Lodges: Several properties emphasize sustainable practices, using solar power, rainwater collection, and local food sourcing. These accommodations appeal to environmentally conscious travelers seeking deeper immersion in the island ecosystem.
